Puerto del Carmen

Located slightly south of the centre of Lanzarote, only 10km from the airport, Puerto del Carmen is undoubtedly the islands' main tourist centre, as well as being the most popular and lively spot for nightlife. Once a small fishing harbour built around the harbour until the 1970s, Puerto del Carmen is now a thriving holiday resort and modern residential centre.

The main Avenida de las Playas, dotted with pretty, landscaped gardens, runs alongside the wide sandy beaches and there are many seating areas where you can relax and admire the views. Every evening the traditional charm of the old town is enlivened by attractive lights, colour and music by a wealth of restaurants catering to all tastes, bars and night life mainly situated along the seafront.

Wherever you are in Lanzarote, you are certain to be close to one of its many beaches.

In addition to the 6 km long sandy beaches (Playa de Los Pocillos, Playa de Matagorda, Playa Grande, Playa Chica), a clear and usually quite calm sea and a pleasant climate, the town also has sporting and tourist facilities of the highest quality.

1. Los Pocillos: 1.2km of toasted sand. The biggest but also the quietest, ideal for swimming and sunbathing.

2. Playa de Matagorda: Good for windsurfing.

3. Playa Grande: Popular central beach with sunbeds, parasols and pedalos.

4. Playa Chica: Small busy beach in a sheltered bay in the Old Town. The sealife makes it popular for diving and snorkelling.

Whilst some are busy and the tourist resort beaches well facilitated, others offer more tranquil settings or crashing waves. Sands of many colours; white, golden, brown or black - the variation is incredible. Whether you want to swim, surf, stroll, sunbathe or build sandcastles, this island has all there is to offer.
